New 2018 Hyundai Elantra

2018 Hyundai Elantra Overview

New/Notable
  • New trim level offerings
  • Best EPA-estimated 32/40 mpg rating for the Eco trim
  • Available 201-hp, turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine
The 2018 Hyundai Elantra is a compact sedan that competes with the Ford Focus, Toyota Corolla, and Honda Civic. This year, it remains largely unchanged.

Five trims are now available: the SE, Value Edition, Eco, Sport, and Limited.

Exterior
The Elantra retains the same appearance from last year. The frontend features a large, hexagonal grille and narrow-slit, angry headlights. The rear end also has an athletic appearance with its angular taillights and chiseled molding. Standard features include LED daytime running lights, power side mirrors, and 15-inch wheels. HID headlights, heated side mirrors, LED taillights, hands-free smart trunk, a power moonroof, chrome exterior accents, and larger 16-inch alloy wheels are also available. The Sport trim level comes with more aggressive body styling.

Under the Hood
Powering the Elantra SE and Limited trims is a standard 147-hp, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. The Eco trim is driven by a 128-hp, turbocharged 1.4-liter 4-cylinder joined to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. The Sport has a more powerful 201-hp, turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder with the 6-speed manual or optional 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Fuel economy for the SE with manual is an EPA-estimated 26/36 mpg city/highway. The rating improves slightly to 29/38 mpg with the automatic. The Eco has the best rating of 32/40 mpg, while the Sport with manual has the worst with 22/33 mpg. With the dual clutch automatic, the Sport improves to 26/33 mpg.

Interior
The Elantra has a sporty cloth interior with a 60/40 split folding rear seat. The center stack features a standard audio system with MP3 playback and a USB port. It can be upgraded with a 7- or 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity for phone and audio, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, BlueLink connect services for emergencies, security, and diagnostics, and an Infinity premium audio system. Standard features include air conditioning, power windows/locks, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel. Leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, and heated rear seats are available as well.

Safety
At the time of this writing, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had not released its safety rating for the 2018 Elantra. A blindspot monitoring system comes standard, while a backup camera is optional. Other available active safety features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control.
