New 2017 Kia Optima

2017 Kia Optima Overview

  • Three engine options; two are turbocharged
  • Sportier styling for SX Turbo and SXL Turbo trims
  • Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility available
The 2017 Kia Optima is a midsize sedan that competes with the Ford Fusion, Mazda6, Toyota Camry, and Honda Accord. This year, it remains largely unchanged.

Five trims are available: the LX, LX Turbo, EX, SX Turbo, and SXL Turbo.

Overall, the Optima has unconventional, yet sportier styling than its competitors. Its aggressive headlights align with the honeycomb grille, which create a unified, minimalistic shape. The wide-mouth lower fascia is flanked by dual, vertical-slit vents. Aside from the front fender garnishes, the body is smooth without much sculpt or ornamentation. The rear also looks athletic with its diffuser-style lower fascia. Standard features include power side mirrors with turn-signal indicators, a remote opening/closing fuel door, and 16-inch alloy wheels. Even sportier styling, adaptive LED headlights, heated side mirrors, LED taillights, a panoramic moonroof, a dual-pipe exhaust system, and larger 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels are available.

Under the hood, there are now three engine options. The LX and EX models use the same base engine from last year, a 185-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder, while the sporty SX and SXL Turbo trims feature a 247-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. A six-speed automatic is the only transmission option for these two engines. The LX trim has an available 178-hp, turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder option that is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. This option gets the best EPA-estimated rating of 28/39 mpg city/highway.

The Optima’s interior borrows heavily from the look and feel of the upscale Cadenza and K900 sedans; the lessons that Kia learned pushing into near luxury territory are starting to pay off in its more mainstream cars as well. Standard features include satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, USB port, air conditioning, and a 60/40-split folding rear seat. Also available are UVO infotainment, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, navigation, heated/ventilated front seats, heated outboard rear seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and two additional USB charging ports in the rear.

Standard safety features include antilock brakes, rearview camera, seven airbags, and electronic stability control. An Around View Monitor is available, which displays a top-down view of the Optima using four cameras mounted around the vehicle. Also optional are rear parking sensors, blind spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warnings, and forward collision warnings with automatic braking.
