New 2016 Ford Fusion

2016 Ford Fusion Overview

  • No notable updates for 2016
  • Three four-cylinder engine options
  • All-wheel drive optional
The 2016 Ford Fusion midsize sedan is a sleek, stylish family vehicle with a diverse mix of powertrain options and excellent safety ratings.

There are no major changes to the Fusion this year; Ford is saving those for a redesigned version that will come out next year as a 2017 model.

For those who have seen the Fusion tooling around since its last redesign, styling will be familiar. The nose still bears that slim, Aston Martin-inspired hexagonal grille flanked by slim headlight fixtures. The look was very eye catching when it debuted but as the years have rolled on, it doesn’t quite carry the panache it once did. It still does carry one of our favorite exterior features: rear tailpipes that are integrated into the rear bumper. 16- to 19-inch wheels are available (depending on trim level), and a power moonroof is optional as well.

Under the hood, the Fusion has three engine options, two of them turbocharged. The base engine remains a 175-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder, with a pair of optional EcoBoost engines offered as well. The first of those is a 231-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder return, joined by a new engine which debuted in 2014, a 175-hp, turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost. Ford claims the 1.5-liter EcoBoost can also be outfitted with an auto start/stop system for even more fuel savings. Six-speed manual or automatic transmissions are offered. All-wheel drive is available on the Titanium trim.

Inside, the Fusion features a modern looking interior that is full of tech options. Standard features include cloth seating (leather optional), air conditioning, cruise control, a 60/40-split folding backseat, SYNC voice commands, and an auxiliary audio input. MyFord Touch, which replaces many of the physical controls in the center console with touch sensitive buttons is optional, as are a navigation system, Sony audio system with HD radio, and dual zone automatic climate control.

The Fusion is one of the best performing vehicles in crash testing earning top marks from both ratings agencies, a full five-star overall rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS. Antilock brakes, an electronic stability system, and eight airbags come standard. Parents of young drivers will be happy to hear about Ford’s MyKey system, which allows them to set speed warnings, stereo levels, and geo-fencing for added safety.

Available safety technology includes a blind spot warning system, lane departure warnings and prevention, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warnings, and inflatable rear seatbelts which help to disperse the impact of a crash on rear passengers.
